Japanese Onsen Yoga Retreat

The raw beauty and serenity of the Kawazu, Izu Peninsula naturally inspire one to shake off the city stress and leave inhibitions behind. This is the ideal location for the Retreat, where you can enjoy myriad therapeutic treatments amidst the vibrant autumn foliage, surrounded by waterfalls, rivers, forests, mountains, beaches, Wasabi farms, and many more mesmerising natural landscapes. the monastery will be your home for the next seven days; it is located on the premises of Jigenin Temple. This modern monastery provides excellent accommodation and traditional experiences, boasting indoor/outdoor hot spring baths, a hot stone sauna, an organic vegetable garden, and abundant pure drinking water from its well.  The temple adjacent to the monastery will be your yoga studio, conducted daily by OpenHouse.  During the daytime, we will visit natural surroundings, from the forest to the pristine beach and historical town of Shimoda. There are also incursions of the traditional tea ceremony and Japanese cooking class. This retreat has a beautiful combination of therapeutic Onsen/spa, inspiring yoga, walks, and authentic Japanese experiences. the monastery's Onsen is at its highest grade, meaning hot water flows directly from the source with no recycling, delusion, filtration nor temperature control. You will receive 100% benefit each time.  Along with the monastery’s holistic approach to its exquisite food,  you will be cleansed from the inside out.

What to Expect

Day 1: Arrival - Transfer to Kawazu, Izu

Arrive in Tokyo.

11:00 Meet the group in Ed Grand Kyobashi and take the private coach bus transfer to Kawazu, Izu Peninsula. Lunch at the highway service area. After checking in, we will have an orientation at the monastery. Unpack and try Onsen, Stone Sauna, and gentle yoga before welcoming dinner. 


Day 2: Kawazu

After a scrumptious breakfast, we will have a leisurely walk at the Kawazu Nanadaru waterfall. There are seven waterfalls next to the walkway. Waterfalls range from 2m to an astonishing 30m in height.  Meditation by the waterfall. Return to the monastery to experience a traditional Japanese tea ceremony


Day 3:  Kawazu

Morning yoga, followed by breakfast. 

Today, we will walk along the beautiful Jogasaki Coast, located on the east side of the Izu Peninsula. It offers dynamic views of the jagged cliffs and stone formations created 4000 years ago by the Mt. Fuji eruption. This is a UNESCO Global Geopark listed site. Lunch en route and outdoor onsen experience overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Return to the monastery and have dinner.


Day 4: Kawazu

After breakfast, an excursion to a small coastal town, Shimoda. It is nestled amongst hills, located near the tip of the Izu Peninsula, historically significant as a port town, and, as such, was Japan's trading and diplomatic contact with the United States. Then Russia began, in the 1850s, ending over two centuries of Japan's so-called isolation. Return to the monastery, Yoga followed by dinner.


Day 5: Kawazu

Morning yoga, followed by breakfast. 

Hiking in Mt.Daruma and Mt. Kinka (13.6km) with a local mountain guide. Walking through bamboo grass at the mountain peaks that offer stunning views of Gulf Suruga and Mt. Fuji. After the hike, stop at the 25m-high scenic Joren Waterfall. Treat yourself with Wasabi-flavoured soft-serve.

Day 6: Kawazu

Morning yoga, followed by breakfast. After breakfast, we will visit a wasabi farm. This region has proudly farmed wasabi for more than 400 years.  Wasabi (Japanese horseradish) is one of the most challenging plants to grow, and to go from a plant to those little green sachets is a complicated process that requires very specific growing conditions. Participate in a Japanese cooking class and make your lunch. Spend the relaxing afternoon of your choice.  On-site Thai massage, foot reflexology, lymph massage, and transfers to the Onsen pool can be arranged.  *Massage and entrance fees for the Onsen pool are at your own expense. Dinner at the monastery. 

Day 7: Kawazu, Haneda- Haneda

Early morning yoga. After breakfast, pack your bag and soak up your final view of Izu before transferring to your homebound flight or next destination.
